Introducing doing research, together: Your new resource for co-designing research

We are excited to launch doing research, together, our innovative online resource to help researchers, consumers, carers and healthcare workers collaborate on health and medical research projects.
This resource provides practical tips and tools for applying co-design principles and co-delivering research projects from start to end.

What this resource is
doing research, together is a resource to help researchers, consumers and healthcare workers work together as a team. It is centred around five key principles:

  • Sharing decisions
  • Valuing everyone’s knowledge equally
  • Building relationships
  • Recognising consumers and carers for their contributions
  • Being honest and flexible

It includes downloadable tools and templates and offers guidance through all stages of the health and medical research cycle.

Who is doing research, together for?
This resource is for everyone involved in health and medical research:

  • people working in a research team
  • anyone curious about how researchers, consumers, carers and others can co-design and co-deliver research.
  • people managing and/or funding health and medical research to understand:
    – what to support and encourage
    – what to look for when evaluating proposals, processes and research outputs.

We have made it as a single resource for researchers, consumers, healthcare workers and other stakeholders so that everyone has access to the same tools and language. doing research, together is designed to be inclusive, accessible, and practical.

Why we made doing research, together
Co-design, co-production and other ‘co’ activities are terms commonly used in research with variable meaning and understanding. This resource was developed to provide clarity about the principles, and practical ways to work in partnership regardless of the ‘co’ activity you are doing (co-planning, co-designing, co-producing, co-analysing, co-evaluating or ‘co’ something else).

How we made doing research, together
This resource was created by KA McKercher – Beyond Sticky Notes and a working group of consumers, researchers, healthcare workers, NSW Regional Health Partners staff, representatives from NSW Regional Health Partners’ partner organisations and Sue Muller (Better Together Collective) using a user-centred design approach. Illustrations were designed by Lucy Klippan of Good Point Design.
